East Village kitchenware shop teaching baking, knife skills and a monthly cookbook club
Kitchen Collage is a locally owned kitchenware shop at 430 E. Locust Street in Des Moines' East Village, where it has been since 2004. Classes take place in the store's kitchen and lean toward baking and holiday treats. Lana teaches Pie Season, which covers an Apple Cranberry Pie and a Pumpkin Cream Cheese Pie. She also teaches a Christmas morning cinnamon roll class. Angie Hidalgo leads royal icing cookie decorating, and Chef Cherry Madole teaches jelly roll cakes.
Many classes are listed as demonstration plus tasting, so check the format before you book. Knife Skills with Clark Stone and the Full-Day Sourdough Bread Workshop are hands-on. Several classes send you home with a tool: a paring knife, a jelly roll pan, or a banneton and bowl scraper.
The Cookbook Club works differently. Your fee includes the book. You cook a recipe from it at home, then bring the dish to share at the store on a Sunday afternoon. The Annual Cookie Exchange follows the same idea, with three dozen cookies to swap.
