South Side school with Peter Kump roots and a hands-on fine cooking series
Gaynor's School of Cooking is at 309 East Carson Street on the South Side, three blocks from Station Square. The kitchen sits in what was once the Terminal Restaurant, inside a historic Victorian warehouse building. The school started as an offshoot of Peter Kump's cooking school in New York City and moved to the Pittsburgh area in 1994. Its aim is home cooking taught to professional standards. Every course is full participation, so you do the prep, the cooking and the tasting.
The core program is The Art of Fine Cooking Series. It usually runs five linked classes that build on each other, and everyone starts with Class 1. Newer one-off classes cost $110 to $115. They include Sunday Supper at Nona's, Dumplings to Go (Chinese potstickers through Pittsburgh potato cheese pierogi), Tacos & Margaritas and Brunch & Bellinis. Couples Nights have a new menu each month.
Groups are a big part of the business: corporate team building, bridal showers and kids' birthday parties. Formats run from a two hour hors d'oeuvres class to a four hour dinner with wine. Reviews often mention instructors Gaynor and Andrew.
