MCC's ACF-accredited culinary school, opening its kitchens to Omaha home cooks
The Institute for the Culinary Arts is the culinary school of Metropolitan Community College in Omaha. The American Culinary Federation accredits its associate degree programs in culinary and baking management with exemplary status. Through its Open Kitchen community courses, the school also runs noncredit workshops for home cooks.
Faculty and industry professionals teach the workshops. Topics cover basic culinary skills, advanced techniques and culinary specialties. The classes are built for nonprofessionals but teach the same techniques the degree students learn. Some take place in the Open Kitchen Studio, a remodeled kitchen that used to be the Metropolitan Utilities District Culinary Theatre. A typical class has 16 students.
Beyond the workshops, the institute offers pairing studios and team-building sessions built around communication and collaboration. It also runs youth camps for cooks ages 8 to 18, where kids can even run a live restaurant. Faculty lead food trips to places from Kansas City to Ireland. A class is canceled if it doesn't reach minimum enrollment seven days before the session, so book early.
