The Civic Kitchen is a cooking school for home cooks at 2961 Mission Street, less than two blocks from the 24th Street BART station. The room is bright and open. It has a cookbook library by the door, a big communal table and three professional ranges. A dishwasher staffs the scullery, so you won't do the dishes.
Classes are hands-on and usually capped at 15. Most end with a shared meal, with wine and beer for adults. The Learn to Cook series covers basics such as eggs, braises and beans. Single classes bring in named teachers: Karen Diggs on Japanese fermentation, Michael Kalanty on Friday Night Pizza, and cookbook authors like Cara Mangini and Anna Voloshyna. There are also live Zoom classes, including Spanish salt cod with Barcelona-based Camila Loew.
It also hosts private parties and team events for up to 56 seated guests. Popular classes sell out, so book early. It holds a 5 rating on Google from 25 reviews.

Public in-person classes usually have no more than 15 students. Some are designed for smaller groups, and a few take more people.
Yes. You chop, stir and sauté, and you can join in as much or as little as you like. Most classes end with a shared meal. Some author events and demos are not hands-on, and the class description says so.
Most in-person adult classes accept students 12 and up. Anyone under 15 must come with an adult 18 or older who also has a ticket. Some classes are only for children or teens.
Email at least 7 calendar days before class to get credit toward a future class. Cancellations after that get no credit, but you can send a friend in your place.
They run live on Zoom and are interactive. They are recorded, so you can cook along later. One spot covers a whole household.
