Private Japanese and healthy cooking lessons with a dietitian in her home above Kahala
Wellness Kitchen is Registered Dietitian Lisa Matsunaga's home kitchen in the hills above Kahala, about 15 minutes from Waikiki. Every class is private for your group of 2 to 5, with ocean views and a meal she plans to be balanced as well as tasty. Lisa grew up between Tokyo and Los Angeles, and Japanese lunches are her core. The Misoyaki Lunch is the most popular, with broiled butterfish or salmon, daikon salad with shiso and ume dressing, and dashi soup. Other menus cover gyoza, okonomiyaki, maki sushi and hamachi kama.
There are Western options too, like a Special Occasion Menu with cioppino and chocolate mousse, Thai takeout favorites and a kids menu with pita pizzas. Menus can be adapted for allergies, vegan diets or heart health. Popovers with mango butter are the most requested add-on.
Classes run weekdays from 10:30am to about 1:30pm, plus one weekend class a month. They mix hands-on work with demonstration, and you get printed recipes and a gift to take home. Book 2 to 4 weeks ahead.
