Culinary college · Norwalk, CA
Norwalk community college culinary program with a student-run cafe and fine dining room
Cerritos College runs a full culinary arts program on its 135-acre campus in Norwalk, near Interstates 5, 605 and 105 and State Route 91. This is college coursework, not a drop-in class. Students work toward certificates in Professional Cooking, Professional Baking and Pastry, or Culinary Arts Management. They can add general education classes to earn an associate's degree. Training includes 800 hours in a kitchen laboratory.
The production kitchen supplies three campus outlets: the Culinary Arts Cafe, the Falcon Room Restaurant, which serves prix-fixe 5-course lunches, and on-campus banquet catering. Students rotate stations each week. They write menus, research international cuisines and work the dining room. The public can eat at the cafe and the Falcon Room from Tuesday to Thursday around lunchtime. It holds 5 stars from 6 Google reviews.
Hobby cooks can enroll, but they have to apply to the college and go through orientation first. They also need to complete CA 101, the sanitation class, and earn a ServSafe Food Manager's Certification before taking any kitchen lab. Tuition is $46 per unit.
