Hands On Gourmet, or HOG, works out of a commercial kitchen and event space in the American Industrial Center in the Dogpatch. The kitchen looks out over San Francisco Bay. The business started more than 20 years ago in co-founder Stephen Gibbs's garage, and today it works with over 30 Bay Area chefs. Chef Mike Chapter now runs it. He has worked at HOG for years and has cooked professionally for 25.
Team building is the main business. Guests split into small groups, each with a professional chef, and cook parts of a multi-course seasonal meal. Afterward everyone eats together, either family-style at the table or as a strolling menu of passed bites. Events last three hours, and groups have ranged from 10 to 300 people. Teams can also compete against each other.
Public classes run 2.5 to 3 hours. They mix demonstration, lecture and hands-on cooking, and you eat what you make at the end. Classes are open to all skill levels, kids are welcome, and you can bring wine or beer. HOG also runs summer camps for kids. It has a 4.9 rating on Google from 59 reviews.
