Jan's on 4th is a small, family-run cooking school in a renovated 100-year-old adobe home in Albuquerque's North Valley. Chef Jan Laird, a native New Mexican with a degree in Home Economics/Nutrition Education from UNM, opened it in 2006. She teaches cooking as a life skill, from basic knife skills to advanced techniques. Her husband C.E., a former adobe home builder, does the baking and teaches pie, baking and dessert classes, including how to bake at high altitude. He also grows many of the vegetables used in class.
Adult classes stay small. You review the recipes together, split into groups to cook, then sit down and eat what you made. You take the recipes home to build your own binder cookbook.
Kids ages 10 to 16 get their own two-hour Saturday class once a month, plus a summer camp in June and July. Private classes work well for birthdays, showers, reunions and team building. The school holds a 5.0 Google rating from 17 reviews.
