Feed the Mass is a Portland nonprofit that began in 2016 as a community cooking school. Today its chef-led kitchen prepares meals for schools, shelters and neighbors in need. It also teaches cooking to youth and adults at the Nourish Building, a 40,000-square-foot hub at 34 NW 1st Ave in Old Town. Google reviewers rate it 4.8 from 88 reviews.
Adult classes run two hours in the evening and each one sticks to a single menu, such as Dumplings & Dipping Sauces or Holiday Baking & Edible Gifts. They cost $55. Your ticket covers instruction, ingredients, equipment, recipes and the food you cook. Beginners and solo guests are welcome.
For ages 11 to 18, the Culinary Academy's Harvest Kitchen: Skills for Life series covers knife safety, baking, pasta and world cuisine. Each class takes up to 16 students. A single class is $35, or the full 18-class program is $504. The building also hosts Haitian cooking classes from Creole Me Up, including Soup Joumou and a Haitian Thanksgiving class.
