Katsumi's Teaching Kitchen is a Japanese cooking school in Beech Grove, Indiana. Mori Lemau founded it in 2015. She is half-Japanese and used to teach the Japanese language. She learned to cook from her mother and grandmother, and as a girl she folded potsticker skins by the hundreds. She says openly that she has no formal training. What she does have is a mother who insisted on authentic ingredients, plus 30 years of Japanese cooking magazines.
Classes are hands-on and usually run 2 to 2.5 hours. You eat everything you make. The menu sticks to homestyle food: Intro to Sushi, Japanese Street Food, Ramen Noodle Set, Katsu Curry, potstickers and bento. Reviewers mention Mori's humor and how much rice quality changed the taste of their food. The school holds a 4.7 Google rating from 59 reviews.
Teams can book the kitchen privately and pick one menu, such as okonomiyaki with miso soup or sushi with potstickers. Corporate events are BYOB. Mori will also bring a class to you if you provide a space with an outlet.
