Japanese homestyle cooking in Beech Grove, taught by half-Japanese founder Mori Lemau
Katsumi's Teaching Kitchen is a small Japanese cooking school with its kitchen in Beech Grove, Indiana. Owner Mori Lemau is half-Japanese. She learned to cook from her mother and grandmother and folded potsticker skins by the hundreds as a girl. She taught Japanese language before she opened the school in 2015. Her mother cared a lot about authentic ingredients, and Mori teaches the same way.
Classes are hands-on and stick to homestyle dishes: Intro to Sushi, Japanese Street Food, a Ramen Noodle Set, Katsu Curry, Potstickers and Bento. Sessions usually run 2 to 2.5 hours, and you eat everything you make. Reviewers mention Mori's humor and how much the quality of the rice changed the food.
Corporate groups get the kitchen to themselves. They pick one menu, such as okonomiyaki with miso soup or sushi with potstickers, and can add a sushi challenge between teams. These events are BYOB. Mori can also bring a class to your space. You supply a room with an outlet. Tell the kitchen about vegetarian or allergy needs before class.
