Nonprofit community kitchen teaching nutrition science through familiar, culturally rooted dishes
SciCook is a San Diego nonprofit founded in 2024 by Dr. Taher Sathaliya, a physician and immunologist who calls his kitchen his "second laboratory." Besides its classes, it serves free All In community meals from the kitchen at St. Luke's Episcopal Church in North Park and runs a sliding-scale eatery called SciEats.
Classes are hands-on and pair cooking with nutrition science. Lessons cover cooking with legumes, building flavor with spices and herbs instead of extra sugar and salt, adapting family recipes and reading nutrition labels. You can book a single two-hour weekday evening workshop or a six-week Saturday afternoon series. The cooking stays close to familiar, culturally rooted dishes. The calendar also has community celebrations for Diwali, Hanukkah, Kwanzaa and Thanksgiving.
Companies, schools and healthcare teams can book team-building sessions at $50 to $100 per person, with the option to prep or pack meals for All In. One group of 40 High Tech High staff cooked Chana Masala, Roasted Chickpea Fajitas, hummus and chickpea pakoras. SciCook holds a 5 rating from 2 Google reviews.
