Shiso Kitchen is a small cooking class studio at 374 Washington St. in Somerville, between Harvard and Union squares. Chef Jessica Roy runs it. She is a former Le Cordon Bleu chef instructor, a Food Network contributing host and a sushi chef. Classes are hands-on and feel like a dinner party: you cook the menu together, then eat it. Google reviewers rate it 4.9 from 126 reviews.
The menus cover a lot of ground. Italian has the most options, with handmade orecchiette in Taste of Puglia and spinach and ricotta gnudi in Italian Flavors of Florence. There are also French dinners, Spanish tapas and paella, a Moroccan tagine night, Greek mezze, Japanese curry with shrimp shumai, bao buns and fresh corn tortilla tacos. Some menus can be made vegetarian or gluten free. Others can't be changed at all, so ask before you book.
Group classes cost $115 per person, and you book by email in pairs. Most start at 6 PM and run 3 to 4 hours. Everyone must be 18 or older. Groups of up to 12 can book the whole kitchen privately.
