Mei Mei started as a food truck in 2012, founded by James Beard Award-winning chef Irene Li and her siblings. Today it is a dumpling factory, cafe and classroom in South Boston. Irene runs it with partners Alyssa Lee and Annie Campbell. The dumplings use pasture-raised pork, and much of the produce comes from Northeast farms.
The public lineup is short and focused. There is a Dumpling Class, a Soup Dumpling Class, a Noodle Class and the Double Awesome Scallion Pancake Class. There are also kids classes and a $39 virtual class. In the private dumpling class you learn several folds, pan sear your own batch and mix your own sauce at the sauce bar. You take home the 15 to 20 dumplings you made, plus recipe cards. Fillings include Lemongrass Pork and a vegan Five Spice Tofu Shiitake.
Private groups are a big part of what Mei Mei does. Reviews describe birthdays and company outings of 30 or more. Mei Mei holds a 4.7 Google rating from 472 reviews.
