The Merry Kitchen is Julie Merry's cooking school, run out of a remodeled house in the Cully neighborhood of NE Portland. Julie is a Registered Dietitian and a Western Culinary Institute graduate. She taught kids' classes and camps at Sur la Table before opening her own school. She is also an OSU Master Gardener and keeps a 500 square foot organic garden out back, which kids work in during summer camps.
Classes are split by age, from about 5 to 15. Recent themes include Hogwarts Table, Holiday Cookies and Roll your own Sushi. Most classes cost $50 and run two hours. Kids cook everything from scratch, eat together at the end and take the recipes home. Camps, private lessons and birthday parties are also on offer.
Adults can book too, but only as a group. Popular menus include homemade pasta, Thai, Indian and sushi. Classes at the house take 8 adults or fewer, and Julie will travel for bigger groups. The school holds a 5 rating from 35 Google reviews.
