Free, union-backed culinary job training and line cook apprenticeships in Los Angeles
The Hospitality Training Academy is not a place for a one-night cooking class. It is a nonprofit career program in Los Angeles. It offers free training and apprenticeships for jobs in hotels, food service, corporate cafeterias and event venues. HTA is a labor-management partnership between UNITE HERE Local 11 and its contributing employers. It says over 95% of its students have a job waiting when they graduate.
Students apply rather than book. The kitchen track includes a Registered Apprenticeship for Line Cooks, launched in 2017, and a Chef de Partie apprenticeship. Instructors include Chef Danny Harold, a Johnson & Wales graduate who founded Harold Catering. Chef Abraham Ortiz cooked at Bouchon Bistro and was on the Gwen Restaurant team that earned a Michelin star in 2022. Chef Rogelio Diaz is an HTA graduate who now assists in teaching. Barista trainers Kelly Corwin and Missy Mayhugh teach coffee.
It suits people who want a paid hospitality career, especially career changers. It holds a 4.7 Google rating from 55 reviews.
