Linda Vista nonprofit training kitchen with monthly classes and team cook-offs
Kitchens for Good is a San Diego nonprofit, founded in 2014, that trains people facing barriers to employment for food and hospitality careers. It launched its Culinary Apprenticeship in 2016. That program was the first of its kind certified by the State of California to serve this group. Cooking classes help pay for that work, and every seat booked supports it.
For individuals, there are monthly workshops and cooking classes covering a range of cuisines and crafts, booked through the Kitchens for Good shop. For groups, there are two set options. The 2.5 hour cooking class has the team prepare a multi-course tasting menu together. The 3.5 hour Chopped Challenge is a team cook-off that includes lunch or dinner.
Group events take place in the commercial kitchen on the Rady Door of Hope campus in central Linda Vista, which has ample parking. Groups get a tour of the classrooms, and an active apprentice helps out and shares their story. The school holds a 4.6 Google rating from 49 reviews.
