Community kitchen · Bronx, NY
Hospital-run $5 healthy cooking classes in English and Spanish, with a rooftop farm
SBH Health System runs this Teaching Kitchen, also called the Center for Culinary Medicine. It sits on the second floor of the SBH Health and Wellness Center at 4507 Third Avenue in the Bronx. Community classes cost $5, are taught in English and Spanish, and are open to anyone 13 or older. Dishes are built around fruits, vegetables, grains and lean protein, kept low in salt and sugar. You eat a full meal in class and take leftovers home.
The menu changes with the seasons and cultural holidays. Recent titles include Thanksgiving on a Budget, No Stove Cooking, Taco Bowl and Fall-Inspired Brunch. The core lineup runs from knife skills and meal prep to vegetarian cooking and healthy desserts like black bean brownies.
Hort Workshop sessions pair a cooking class with a 30-minute activity led by The Horticultural Society of New York. You might tour the rooftop garden, greenhouse and bee hives. Registered dietitian Abbie Gellman directs the kitchen. Classes cap at 16 people, and private events can be booked.
