Multi-week courses and boot camps
Home Cooking New York started in 2002, when founder Jennifer Clair left her Food Editor job at Martha Stewart Living and began teaching in students' home kitchens. Today it runs two connected teaching kitchens at 158 Grand Street, on the edge of SoHo and Chinatown, with seven chef-instructors. It holds a 4.8 Google rating from 108 reviews.
Single classes run three hours, cost $110 and take up to 10 students. Everyone gets a cutting board and chef's knife at a big wooden worktable, with the chef at the head. Class ends with a sit-down meal and a recipe packet. Topics range from Knife Skills 101 and How to Cook Fish to Persian Dinner, Ramen Workshop and Great British Bake Off bakes.
The boot camps are the core of the school. They meet weekly for four to six weeks at $125 a class. Beginners work through knife skills, chicken, fish, beans and pasta. Advanced cooks tackle stocks, duck and bouillabaisse.

Yes, with some demonstration mixed in. Each student has a cutting board and chef's knife station at a shared wooden worktable, and the chef teaches from the head of the table.
A 3-hour public class is $110, takes up to 10 students and includes a sit-down meal and a recipe packet.
It's a skills series that meets once a week for 4 to 6 weeks at $125 per class, with at most 10 people. There are beginner, intermediate and advanced culinary camps, plus vegetarian, flavor-building and baking camps. 5-day intensive versions are also offered.
Cancel at least 48 hours ahead for credit toward another class. Boot camps need a week's notice. There are no refunds, but you can send a friend in your place.
Most classes are naturally gluten-free, except pasta, ramen, bagels and baking. There's a list of vegetarian-friendly classes and a vegetarian boot camp.
