Scottsdale cookware store with a teaching kitchen since 1993 and a six-week skills series
Sweet Basil is a women-owned cookware store and cooking school that has taught in Scottsdale since 1993. Since 2021 it has been in the La Mirada Shopping Center at Pima and Pinnacle Peak Roads. The shop sells cookware, knives and serveware, and the classes happen in its kitchen. Classes are hands-on or demonstration, and each one ends with a full meal of what was cooked.
Most public classes cost $105. The fall calendar covers a lot of ground: Vietnamese Pleasures, Tapas and Paella Party, Ribs and Wings, Harvest Pies and Cheesy Goodness, where Jan D'Atri teaches ricotta, mozzarella, mascarpone and Boursin. Lisa Brisch's Fish of the Sea covers seven dishes, from oven-steamed fish with ginger to shrimp creole.
Cooks with some experience can join Essence Intermediate, a six-week series that ends with a mystery basket challenge. There are also Gourmet Couples nights and classes for kids 8 and up and teens. For groups there are team building classes at $115 per person with a 10-person minimum, plus private parties for birthdays and showers.
