The Garden Kitchen is a University of Arizona Cooperative Extension program, set up with the City of South Tucson and Pima County. It teaches gardening, cooking and nutrition together, and the money from its paid cooking classes goes back into free programs for Pima County residents. It holds a 5 rating from 14 Google reviews.
Public hands-on classes focus on heart-healthy recipes. The cuisine changes from class to class, and the goal is to help people feel more at home in the kitchen. Groups can book private classes. Knife Skills 101 is the most popular one. You practice mince, dice, brunoise, bâtonnet and julienne, then eat a light Mexican-style meal. The Pasta Making Class uses manual pasta machines and offers dishes like mushroom and mascarpone ravioli. Sauces 101 covers béchamel, velouté and espagnole, plus chimichurri and harissa.
The program also runs a free Gardening Hour on Tuesday mornings, where neighbors can tend and harvest the garden. Its PLAZA Mobile Market sells local produce around Tucson.
