Tucson restaurant chefs take turns teaching home cooks in hands-on and demo classes
Flying Aprons Tucson is a cooking school for home cooks, founded by Michele Schulze. Classes meet at Cook Tucson, 1702 N. Stone Ave. There is no single house chef. A long roster of local pros takes turns teaching, among them Carlotta Flores of El Charro Café, Janos Wilder of Janos Cooks, Maria Mazon of BOCA Tacos y Tequila and pastry chef Kayla Draper of Fluffy Sugar Bakery. Menus follow the seasons and what's happening around the Old Pueblo.
Classes take 10 to 16 students and run in two styles. In demonstration classes you watch the chef cook. In hands-on classes you work in small groups to make all or part of the menu. Either way, you eat full portions of every dish. Some classes also run on Zoom, with Ready-To-Go Kits when a menu needs hard-to-find ingredients.
Kids get their own track: Junior Chefs for ages 7 to 12 and Teen Chefs for ages 13 to 17. Private parties last three hours. Guests start with appetizers, cook or bake together, then sit down to the meal they made.
