Ballard community kitchen with three-hour hands-on classes that end in a shared meal
The Pantry is a community kitchen and cooking school at 1417 NW 70th Street in Ballard. Brandi Henderson founded it in 2011, and a large team of instructors now teaches there. Classes lean toward deep dives and traditional food crafts, and they are fully hands-on. You chop, stir and sauté alongside the other students and the instructor for about three hours.
Most classes end with a communal meal, so skip a big dinner beforehand but don't arrive starving. Some classes on the schedule are always vegetarian, pescatarian or gluten-free, and you can filter for them. Once a month the chefs also cook a five-course, family-style dinner with paired wines for 40 guests at two communal tables.
Groups can book a private hands-on class for birthdays, milestones or team outings. It typically costs $145 per guest and fits up to 18 people in the largest kitchen. Tickets are non-refundable but you can transfer them. Kids are welcome, but those 14 and younger must come with an adult. Google reviewers rate it 4.3 from 72 reviews.
