Cake and cupcake decorating classes at Duff Goldman's Ace of Cakes bakery in Baltimore
Charm City Cakes is the Baltimore bakery Chef Duff Goldman founded in 2002. It is also where the Food Network show Ace of Cakes was filmed. You take classes in a section of the working decorating studio, so real custom cakes are in progress around you. The kitchen itself is off-limits, and the staff handle the cleanup.
The weekly public classes are labeled beginner or intermediate and follow the seasons. Coming up are an Autumn Harvest Cupcake Class, a Thanksgiving Cupcake Class and a beginner Snow Friends Class, each $75. The Geode Cake Class and Holiday Gift Cake Class are $150 each.
Private classes work for birthdays, family events and team outings of up to 12 people. Instruction runs 90 minutes inside a two hour slot. Each guest decorates either four cupcakes with buttercream and fondant or an iced 6 inch round cake covered in fondant. You can bring your own food and drink. Public classes on the calendar are $75 for cupcake classes and the Snow Friends class, and $150 for cake classes such as the Geode Cake Class. Private cupcake classes start at $250 for 1 to 2 people. Private cake classes start at $350.
In a cupcake class each person gets four baked cupcakes to ice with buttercream and decorate with fondant. In a cake class each person covers an iced 6 inch round cake in fondant and decorates it. All tools and materials are provided.
