Baltimore Chef Shop is a teaching kitchen on The Avenue in Hampden, with three kitchens at 807 and 811 W 36th Street. Professional chefs lead hands-on classes, and the focus is on technique rather than following a recipe. The range is wide: Butchery 101, Japanese Ramen, Sri Lankan and Dutch Caribbean menus, Maryland Favorites, and a long baking list that runs from Bagels 101 to a two-day croissant workshop.
Classes come in two styles. In Techniques classes, everyone makes their own version of one dish, like paella, crepes or pies, and you get samples rather than a full meal. In Menu-Based classes, students split into two teams of 6 or 7, cook a full menu together and sit down to eat it. Couples Cook versions work well for a date night. Multi-week series cover kitchen techniques, baking, and regional French and Italian food.
The kitchen is BYOB, with ice, glasses and a corkscrew ready, but spirits aren't allowed. Open classes cap at 14. Evening classes are 18 and over. It has a 4.5 Google rating from 152 reviews.

Yes. The kitchen is BYOB and provides ice, glasses and a corkscrew. Spirits and hard liquor aren't allowed, and they ask you to drink in moderation.
Teens 15 and up can join morning or afternoon classes with an adult. Evening classes after 6pm are 18+. Parent & Me classes and summer camps are open to kids 8 and up. Kids 7 and under aren't allowed in the kitchens.
Classes are non-refundable. Call or email at least 48 hours ahead to reschedule. Changes made inside 48 hours forfeit your credit, but you can send a friend in your place.
Menu-Based classes end with a sit-down dinner. Techniques classes, like the baking classes, end with tastings, and you can take leftovers home in containers they provide.
There is metered street parking out front and free street parking north and south of 36th Street. The area gets busy on evenings and weekends, so leave extra time.
