Italian-rooted Waverly nonprofit where kids and families cook with real chefs
The Forge is the new home of The BIT Center, a Baltimore nonprofit at 3009 Greenmount Avenue in Waverly. It began in 1955 as an Italian cultural circle. Today it runs community health, food access and gastronomy programs, plus B-More Pasta and Be a Chef for a Day. Cooking classes are booked through the center's Eventbrite page.
The best-known event is the National Children's Gastronomy Festival, now in its 10th edition. Children ages 5 to 14 each get a station with a guest chef and make one dish from start to finish. They measure, knead, taste and clean up. Ingredients, equipment and aprons are provided, and younger siblings get a toddler space. The 2026 festival ran on October 24 and 25 with twelve guest chefs.
Taueret K. Thomas leads gastronomy education and cooks for special events such as The Longevity Luncheon. This is a good fit for families and anyone who wants their class money to support a neighborhood food program. It has a 5 rating on Google from 2 reviews.
