Chef Ronna Welsh's custom private classes on improvising and zero waste in Sunset Park
Purple Kale Kitchenworks is the Sunset Park studio of chef and cookbook author Ronna Welsh, who wrote The Nimble Cook. The kitchen sits in a converted box factory just south of Industry City, with brick walls, 14-foot ceilings and big windows. There is no fixed class calendar. Most teaching happens in private, hands-on classes that Ronna designs and teaches herself. Each one is built around your goals, not a set menu.
The focus is technique, improvisation and cooking with less waste. Past custom classes include Cooking Without a Recipe, Building a Versatile Pantry and Working with Fish and Shellfish. The Knife Skills class is a regular draw. In one of her lessons, the Celery Sort, students break a single vegetable into its parts and taste the differences.
Groups run from one to eight people. Families, couples, teens and work teams all book, and the studio is OPWDD approved for neurodiverse students. The Parlor next door hosts occasional ticketed events, such as storytelling dinners with Stories on Hudson and a dumpling workshop.
