Cooking school · Brooklyn, NY
Private, custom classes in a Sunset Park studio, all taught by chef Ronna Welsh
Purple Kale Kitchenworks is a small cooking school in Sunset Park, Brooklyn, just south of Industry City. It sits in a converted box factory with brick walls, 14-foot ceilings and big windows. Chef and cookbook author Ronna Welsh, a veteran of New York restaurants and test kitchens, teaches every class herself.
There is no public class schedule. Every class is private and built around you after a phone or email consultation. Past examples include Cooking Without a Recipe, Building a Versatile Pantry and Working with Fish and Shellfish. The teaching follows her book The Nimble Cook: improvise from what you have, waste less and taste closely. In her Celery Sort lesson, students split one vegetable into its parts and taste each. There is also a dedicated Knife Skills class.
Classes run on weekdays from 10am, for one student or as many as eight. Couples, families with teens, work teams and neurodiverse students all book here, and the studio is OPWDD approved. It holds a 5 rating from 11 Google reviews.
